Michigan Marriage License Guide | A Simple I Do Officiants

Michigan Marriage License Guide | A Simple I Do Officiants

Before you can have your dream wedding in Michigan, you’ll need one important document: your marriage license. Luckily, the process is simple when you know the steps. Here’s your guide to getting a marriage license in Michigan—and why having an experienced officiant like Nichole Bertucci makes all the difference.

Who Can Apply for a Marriage License in Michigan? To apply, at least one of you must be a Michigan resident. Residents apply in their home county. If you’re from out of state, you’ll need to apply in the county where your wedding will take place. Both parties must be at least 18 years old, though 16- and 17-year-olds can apply with parental consent.

What You’ll NeedBring valid photo identification, such as a driver’s license or state ID, and your birth certificate. Some counties also require a Social Security card. Be prepared to pay a small fee, which varies by county.

Waiting Period and ExpirationMichigan has a three-day waiting period after you apply before you can pick up your license. If you’re in a rush, some counties allow you to request a waiver for an additional fee. Once issued, your marriage license is valid for 33 days.

How the License Gets CompletedOn your wedding day, your officiant (like Nichole Bertucci of A Simple I Do) will guide you through signing the license along with your witnesses. Afterward, the officiant files the completed license with the county clerk, making your marriage legal.

Why You Need the Right OfficiantThe marriage license is only valid if signed by an authorized officiant. That’s why choosing Nichole matters—she brings both legal authority and a warm, professional approach to your ceremony. Beyond paperwork, she makes your wedding meaningful, joyful, and stress-free.

Final ThoughtsGetting your marriage license in Michigan is straightforward, but it’s just the beginning of your journey. Once the paperwork is done, you’ll want an officiant who knows how to bring heart and soul to your wedding day. With Nichole Bertucci and A Simple I Do, you’ll have both the legal and emotional parts of your ceremony taken care of beautifully.

Do I Need a Wedding Officiant in Michigan? Exploring the Importance of an Officiant on Your Big Day

Congratulations on your engagement! As you start planning the wedding of your dreams in Michigan, you may wonder whether you need a wedding officiant to solemnize your marriage. While it's true that some couples opt for DIY ceremonies or ask a friend to officiate, having a professional wedding officiant can make a significant difference on your big day. In this blog post, we'll delve into the importance of hiring a wedding officiant in Michigan and explore the benefits they bring to your special celebration. Let's dive in!
  1. Legal Requirements
One of the primary reasons why you need a wedding officiant in Michigan is the fulfillment of legal requirements. A licensed wedding officiant is authorized to perform marriage ceremonies and will ensure that all necessary paperwork is completed accurately and submitted to the appropriate authorities. This crucial step guarantees that your marriage is legally recognized, sparing you from any unnecessary stress or complications down the road.
  1. Personalization of the Ceremony
A professional wedding officiant in Michigan can customize your ceremony to reflect your unique love story and personalities. Through pre-wedding consultations, they can gain insights into your relationship, allowing them to craft a heartfelt and personalized script. This personal touch will make your wedding ceremony a cherished and memorable experience for both you and your guests.
  1. Expert Guidance and Support
Planning a wedding can be overwhelming, and having an experienced wedding officiant by your side can provide valuable guidance and support. They can offer insights on wedding traditions, rituals, and etiquette, helping you strike the perfect balance between modern and traditional elements. Moreover, their calming presence will help ease nerves and create a warm atmosphere for you and your guests.
  1. Seamlessly Orchestrating the Ceremony
A skilled wedding officiant knows how to manage the flow of the ceremony seamlessly. From cueing the bridal party's entrance to coordinating with the venue staff and photographers, they ensure that everything runs smoothly. This ensures that your special moments are captured flawlessly, allowing you to focus on what truly matters - your love and commitment to each other.
  1. Inclusivity and Interfaith Expertise
Michigan is a culturally diverse state, and your wedding may involve people from various religious and cultural backgrounds. A professional wedding officiant is trained to be inclusive and respectful of different beliefs. They can seamlessly incorporate cultural traditions or interfaith elements into the ceremony, ensuring that everyone feels welcome and valued.
  1. Rehearsal Coordination
A wedding officiant plays a crucial role in leading the wedding rehearsal. This rehearsal ensures that everyone involved in the ceremony knows their cues and roles, reducing the chances of any last-minute confusion or mishaps during the actual event. A well-rehearsed ceremony ensures that the focus remains on the joyous celebration of your love.

While you may be tempted to skip hiring a wedding officiant in Michigan, doing so could lead to unnecessary stress, legal complexities, and a less personalized ceremony. A professional wedding officiant brings expertise, guidance, and a personal touch that will elevate your wedding day to new heights. From ensuring legal compliance to crafting a ceremony that reflects your unique love story, their presence is invaluable.

So, as you plan your dream wedding in Michigan, consider the benefits of having a wedding officiant by your side. Their contribution will help make your special day an unforgettable and joyous celebration of love, surrounded by your nearest and dearest.

how to get married in michigan

2/19/2023

How do you even begin the process of getting married in Michigan?

It's a question I hear time and time again, Nichole I don't even know where to begin!

Well let's start at the beginning of how to get married legally in the state of Michigan. Hi, I'm Nichole, owner of A Simple I Do Wedding Officiants and were a group of legally ordained wedding officiants/ministers who serve all couples in southeast Michigan. We concentrate on small intimate weddings - we'll meet you at a local cafe to sign your license and make it legal or at a park or venue - the key is keeping it simple, stress free and all about your love.

To get legally married in the state of Michigan, you need to follow these steps:

Apply for a marriage license: The first step to getting legally married in Michigan is to apply for a marriage license at a County Clerk's office. You and your partner must appear in person to complete the application, and you'll need to bring your government-issued photo identification (e.g., driver's license, passport, or state ID) and your social security numbers. The fee for a marriage license varies by county.

Wait for the waiting period: In Michigan, there is a three-day waiting period after you apply for a marriage license. This means that you cannot get married until at least three days after you apply for the license. However, some counties may waive the waiting period for an additional fee.
Have a ceremony: You and your partner must have a ceremony to get legally married. The ceremony can be performed by a judge, a magistrate, a county clerk, a mayor, or a member of the clergy. You'll need to have two witnesses present during the ceremony.

File the marriage license: After the ceremony, the person who performed the ceremony will sign your marriage license. You must then return the signed license to the County Clerk's office within 10 days of the ceremony.

Get a marriage certificate: After your signed marriage license has been received and processed by the County Clerk's office, you can obtain a certified copy of your marriage certificate. You'll need this certificate to change your name and for other legal purposes.

It's important to note that the above steps are for a standard civil marriage in Michigan. If you're planning a religious ceremony, you may need to meet additional requirements. Additionally, Michigan does not recognize common law marriage, so you must have a ceremony to be legally married.
